The goal of this new event is to address the needs of technical communicators, their managers and clients - from all corners of the industry. The event is not about the ISTC or for the ISTC. It is to benefit its individual members, technical communicators who don't happen to be members, and the wider industry. Here are a few key features to look out for at this year�s conference: Tues 24th � Pre-conference workshops. Wed 23rd � Keynote presentations, full day of workshops, case studies and gala dinner. The courses are aimed at translators who wish to improve their technical knowledge of financial concepts. The course will cover the key areas encountered by financial translators (macroeconomics, bonds, equities, interest rates, corporate finance, accounting, etc.). CLS believes that good financial translating requires good understanding of financial concepts: the aim of this course is to give translators a solid grounding in the key areas of finance. Audiovisual Translation (AVT) earned its credentials as a practice and a research area in the second half of the 20th century. Now, at the close of the 21st century�s first decade, the discipline is expanding at a mind-boggling rate. AVT is a form of communication that is subject to, but also actively engaged in aspects of social, political and technological change that call for both increased specialisation and greater diversification on the part of practitioners and researchers alike. In fact, AVT also offers a world of possibilities and challenges to its users. This conference aims to map the current status of AVT research, production, distribution and consumer needs. The complexity and the ways in which research input, technology, user needs and the business aspects of AVT intertwine, merits serious thought. The 2nd international Media for All conference in 2007 revealed concerns about the apparent tug of war between �quantity� and �quality�. The present conference would like to investigate whether these concerns were justified. AVT practice crosses many disciplinary borders, but is also thrust in a variety of directions by different influential players. We have mentioned technology, business and political interests. AVT, from both the traditional �translational� perspective as well as the more encompassing accessibility angle, is considered to be a tool for social integration. But is it? Will AVT and its users be able to reap the benefits of the digital age? Will the research community be able to turn the need for specialisation and diversification of research into an asset? Event Date From: 22 September 2009 Event Date To: 24 September 2009 Venue: Institute for the German Language Event Details: The Institute for the German Language is undertaking preliminary work for a comprehensive corpus-based grammar of the German language (project Grammatical Variation within Near-Standard German). This gives occasion for the institute to organise the Third International Conference Grammar & Corpora in cooperation with the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. The conference will cover the following two areas: 1. recent findings in corpus-based grammar research in German, English, Romance and Slavic languages; 2. theoretical and methodological issues in corpus-linguistic grammar research. A look at corpus-based grammar research in German, English or the Romance and Slavic languages shows that not only are there very different theoretical stances in these various traditions but also different empirical focal points of research. The conference organisers feel that this state of affairs should not be seen as an obstacle but as the starting point for fruitful trans-disciplinary discussions. The confrontation of philological traditions, empirical description, theory, computational linguistics and corpus linguistics provides opportunities to further a critical but constructive dialogue. In many cases, this has led to misunderstanding and conflict. One typical example is Central Europe and the Iron Curtain. Another fitting example on the occasion of this conference is Prague. Owing to its position in the middle of Europe, Prague, and Czech society as a whole, has always struggled with its identity in relation to �East and West� and has been strongly influenced by foreign cultures and political regimes throughout its long history. Accordingly, Prague has often been referred to as a crossroads of Europe between the East and the West, between Capitalism and Socialism, between Catholicism and Protestantism, and between Slavonic and Germanic culture. However, are traditional, bipolar world views such as �East and West� valid and acceptable today? In a world of high-tech communication, globalization, and change, we need, rather, to look beyond traditional, narrow world views, such as �East and West�, and open channels up to more productive modes of discourse. Undoubtedly, the activities of translators and interpreters play a crucial role in this ongoing process of change and in shaping our understanding of the world. This conference aims to bring together researchers and PhD students not only to discuss these ideas but also to question the traditional frameworks associated with such concepts as �East and West�.
