Guided Pub Walk - the Market Pubs of Smithfield and Charterhouse Square

Thursday 17 August 2017, 05:45

Guided Pub Walk - the Market Pubs of Smithfield and Charterhouse Square

Start time: 6pm (meet from 5.45, outside St Paul’s tube station)

The walk will feature the interesting stories of Smithfield Market, St Bart’s Hospital and Charterhouse Square centred on its famous historic pubs. Since March 2017, Charterhouse itself is now open to the public.

Pubs visited will include the Bishop’s Finger- a market pub full of interesting pictures of historic Smithfield, the Fox and Anchor – a completely unspoilt Art Nouveau pub built in 1898 full of character with its original furnishings and pictures; the Red Cow – a typical market pub from 1854 that used to be frequented by the late actor, Peter Ustinov who indulged in the landlord’s infamous fiery hot toddies, and the Hand and Shears, originally the 12th century alehouse of St Bart’s Hospital and now a gem of a Victorian pub where the walk will end with a meal at 8 30pm. Supper, at the Hand and Shears, is optional.

It is a short walk to St Paul’s tube station from the Hand and Shears.

Cost: LRG members - free; non-LRG £5.
