Setting Up as a Freelance Translator

Designed specifically for graduates or new entrants to the profession with little or no business experience, Setting Up as a Freelance Translator offers direct access to eight practising translators who have successfully launched their own freelance careers. Over more than 20 hours of webinars and individual sessions, you will learn how to develop a freelance translation business and gain an understanding of how the translation market operates.

Tutors

Each of the eight tutors, all professional practicing translators, will provide valuable advice on how to boost your business from the very beginning. Click on the "Tutors" link or on their names in "Schedule" to discover their individual profiles.

Content

Over a period of eight weeks you will learn how to:

  • Discover your strengths and get useful hints on how and where to find work.
  • Produce a professional quote and invoice for work.
  • Make sure you get paid on time.
  • Explore the benefits of using social media and networking to promote yourself positively.
  • Identify the practicalities of working from home.
  • Evaluate the benefits of developing a specialism.
  • Produce a translator specific CV.
  • Develop a realistic business plan.

Course Structure

Eight live webinars, online discussion, Q&A sessions and practical activities.

With over 20 hours of tutor time and one hour of individual feedback on your CV and business plan, plus additional reading time, you will be able to record over 30 hours of formal and informal CPD.
