Mrs Emma Paulay MITI

I am an experienced freelance translator with a previous 14-year career in a bilingual environment in the international press circulation industry in Paris. I hold dual British-French citizenship and have been living in France since 1993.

I have a BA (hons) in International marketing and French and an MA in Translation (distinction). I was very keen to have formal training in translation and found that post-graduate training gives excellent insight into the decision-making process involved in translation and a firm grounding in text linguistics. My dissertation topic was the use of rhetorical devices in political speeches and the implications for translation.

My marketing qualifications and experience in working as import account manager in France with clients from all over Europe and the US provided me with good knowledge of business terminology. My work in the press industry also gave me an insight into transport, printing, distribution (with many hours spent in distribution warehouses and at print plants) and retail.

Living in France for a long period of time has enabled me to gain an in depth understanding of the language in all aspects of daily life. I visit my family in England regularly and am a member of local associations Le Mans 24h Classic British Welcome and a Franco-Anglo club, which have many British and American members. These contacts, along with access to the British media and reading novels, keep me up to date with the English language.

In recent years I have developed a specialisation in sports translation, with extensive experience in motorsports in particular.
