‘Tech’. Such a little word that encompasses a vast and still-growing sector which has transformed the way we create, use and respond to terminology. Ken Paver’s 90 minute workshop will present a series of practical techniques for coping with the proliferation of new tech terminology. It will include a collaborative German-to-English translation involving real-life texts, designed to help participants put these techniques into practice in their own work.

For translators, the terrifying pace of development in the technology sector can appear daunting. How can we possibly keep up with it all? There’s no need to despair, however: a combination of traditional techniques and new approaches can help you deliver the accurate, bang up-to-date translations that your customers demand.

Some new terms will survive; others will disappear as quickly as they emerged. There is occasionally a sense of “the emperor’s new clothes” around some new terminology. However, it’s important not to dismiss technical terminology and tech neologisms out of hand. In addition, it’s always easier to understand neologisms from a solid technical base; the more you understand about a subject, the more likely you are to be able to understand a new term, and find an appropriate translation.

• Go about inventing a new target-language translation for a completely new source-language term
• Learn about new developments in your field
• Demonstrate to clients that you know what you’re talking about when it comes to technical translation
