Medical Network: What is autism? A personal perspective

Medical Network: What is autism? A personal perspective

MedNet member Nick Rosenthal has agreed to give a talk about autism on Zoom on Saturday 20 March, 2021.

Nick has been an ITI member since 1987 and is well known as a translator from German and French, a trainer in the translation field, and as a past chair of ITI’s Board. Less well known is that Nick is also a qualified autism awareness trainer, with experience of delivering autism awareness training to hospital staff, football club staff and counselling teams. More recently, Nick has been involved in delivering some of the early pilot schemes for the Oliver McGowan training scheme, which is aimed at healthcare staff and social care staff (in both senses, care workers and also social services / social workers).

In this session, Nick will give a presentation on the lived experience of autism, exploring the subject from a social model approach (looking at how we can accommodate autistic people in society), rather than the medical model of seeing neurodiversity as a set of deficits or impairments. We will also look at the power of language around disability. This will be an interactive session, with plenty of time for discussion and audience participation.
