ITI Conference 2022

Fringe events

It's not all work and no play at an ITI conference. For our in-person attendees there's always plenty happening both before and around the conference.
Monday 30 May

Masterclass: Beginnings, endings... and the bit in the middle

Date: Monday, 30 May
Time: 2-4pm
Venue: Empress Suite (Charlotte Room) at The Grand Hotel
Cost: £40 + VAT (includes £10 contribution to our Bursary fund which will help Student members attend the ITI conference)
How to book: Limited to 50 places. Book at the same time as your conference ticket, or return to your conference booking in My events and select the 'Get more tickets' button

This masterclass will invite you to take a new look at three essential parts of your writing – the introduction, the ending and the middle.

Intros are crucial to whatever you write. Bore or confuse your reader and they won’t read any further. We will be looking at different intros and discuss which ones work, which ones don’t and why. We’ll also look at endings – how to write a satisfying and stylish last paragraph that doesn’t repeat the intro or just stop abruptly. We don’t ignore the middle section either and we’ll show you a technique to help ensure your writing flows.

There will also be a short but surprisingly entertaining section on spelling and how to remember the words that always trip you up. This is a highly interactive session and you’ll be working in small groups. We’ll get you writing, so please bring a laptop/tablet or pen and paper.

Whether you're a translator for whom writing is part of the job, or an interpreter who writes as part of your marketing activities, you will benefit from Judy's wisdom. Book at the same time as your conference ticket, or return to your conference booking in My events and select the 'Get more tickets' button.

Places are limited to 50 on a first come first served basis. The masterclass will not be recorded and is only available to book for in-person conference attendees. If the Conference is cancelled for any reason, the cost of the masterclass will be refunded.

Photographer Dean Atkins will be available at the conference, giving you the opportunity to update your profile image. A head and shoulders photograph is useful in so many ways - to use on profiles, on your website and on all your professional social platforms. Dean shoots against a neutral white background, creating space around the face, which enables the image to be to cut out easily for editorial purposes.

What to wear - generally speaking, solid, neutral colours work best for profile shots as they are less distracting than patterns.

Posing - some people find sitting in front of a camera easy, others don’t! But don't panic. Dean has been doing this a long time, and he will put you at your ease. He's there to to achieve the perfect result for you. After the session you will receive a selection of images via an email download. These are free of any copyright restrictions and may be used in any way you wish.

Singing translators

The Singing Translators will be back in Brighton with a new musical director.

As well as being a translator, Becky Mynett is an experienced choir director who is used to working with singers of all abilities. This popular fringe event is open to all in-person conference delegates, so whether you regularly sing tenor in your local choral society or just sing along in the car when no one’s listening, you'll be very welcome to join them. This is intended to be a fun, relaxing activity and no previous experience is required. As in previous years, there will be a couple of short rehearsals and an informal performance at the end of the conference.

Further information about how to join the Singing translators will be emailed to in-person conference delegates in April.
