Leading into the future

In their session at conference, ITI chief executive Paul Wilson and chair Sarah Griffin-Mason highlighted key areas of focus for the Institute and what was being achieved – along with some striking statistics.


The importance of people and groups working together, and the value of networks was stressed in the way the Institute goes about achieving its objectives.

It’s all about people sharing things and helping others. Sarah said that she had found membership invaluable when she had returned to the UK and started her translation career here.

The stats

  • There are now 3,016 members – the highest number the Institute has ever had
  • There are 1,669 qualified members – also the highest number ever
  • Seven members became Fellows over the last two years


Paul said the Institute would love more people coming forward to become Fellows.

In terms of general membership, there was still some way to go – a lot of people had not found their professional home.



There was a need to unite wisely with other entities, as well as unite as members.

This helps in achieving Institute objectives and pushing the message outwards. With this in mind, the Institute is also working towards Chartered Status.

The question often arises as to why the various entities do not merge, but individually they actually have different strengths.

The session also highlighted the new expanded awards programme – ‘we recognise the good things that we do’.

The ITI conference was also a very valuable way of bringing people together. This took place every two years, and now there was a plan to organise a different one-day event in alternate years.



Machine translation is much more capable, but technologies cannot replace the fields of translation and interpreting. They will change the way that practitioners operate. Professionals need to keep updating and adapting their knowledge and skills, as the requirements of clients and society evolve.

  • 146 participated in free webinars
  • 455 attended free events
  • 7 Setting up as a Freelance Translator programmes run over the past 3 years, 146 SUFT alumni



We need to be aware of all the models that are available, and what works for us. Do not work for one that does not suit you. There was a discussion around some interesting co-working models that were now in use.

ITI is currently working on being able to prove compliance with ISO 17 100 on behalf of members – so that the compliance mark can be put against their name in the membership directory.

We are currently working with a number of universities on particular subjects, including the University of Wolverhampton on interpreter tools. ITI plans to get itself into a position to where it can commission and support more research.

The Institute is planning to develop a more structured ITI Ambassador programme. It is important that translators and interpreters go out in the wider community, for example in schools, colleges and local language and careers events, to raise awareness about what this type of work involves and what a professional service looks like and can achieve.

  • Over 6,000 people follow the Institute on Twitter
  • 340 delegates from around the world attended this year’s conference
