ITI is a Company Limited by Guarantee. Its elected Board is responsible for all strategic, financial and membership aspects of the Institute. The ITI Board for 2017/18 is as follows:


Sarah Griffin-Mason MITI (Chair)

Sarah Griffin-Mason is a translator, editor and educator with specialist knowledge in the areas of education, non-government entities and some areas of medicine.

Sarah trained as a translator and editor with the InterPress Service in Montevideo, Uruguay where she worked through the 1990s. She currently freelances for a number of regular clients within the UK and abroad including Oxford University and the European Training Foundation.

She has served on the Board since May 2013, is actively involved with the ITI Professional Development Committee and has helped organise professional development events and conferences for ITI, the Mediterranean Editors and Translators (MET) Association and the University of Portsmouth.

Outside of her translation and editing hours, Sarah is a Senior Lecturer on the MA in Translation at the University of Portsmouth and also gives guest lectures at the University of Bristol and London Metropolitan. She designed the mentoring scheme for new translators currently used by several of the ITI Networks and also produced the framework for the CPD ladder.

Sarah is a frequent contributor to the ITI Bulletin. She is committed to CPD and the development of a strong Community of Practice for ITI members, and she speaks regularly on these themes and others at events with entities such as AsLing, Aptrad, Elia, MET and several universities.

Paul Appleyard MITI (Vice-chair)

He is a French/English specialist with 25 years’ experience in translation and localisation.

Paul graduated from Saint David’s University College, Lampeter and then studied translation at the University of Surrey.

He has managed the translation and localisation process for software companies, including working on some large software installations in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia as well as once managing the simultaneous release of a complete ERP package in 21 languages.

While in the United States. he became a member of the American Translators Association in 1995.

Paul has been a director of a language services provider with his wife since the turn of the millennium.

Katie Belo dos Santos FITI

A British and Portuguese national, Katie studied Languages and Literature at the University of Coimbra in Portugal, participating as an undergraduate in the Erasmus exchange programme in France and the UK. After graduating, she remained in the UK to pursue a career as a police and court interpreter and translator. She taught at the University of Portsmouth for nine years and is currently working for City, University of London.

Katie sat on the APCI Committee for four years and represented this association on the LIT Search Project.  She coordinated the ITI Wessex Regional Group for five years, and has been a member of the ITI Professional Development Committee since 2012.

In 2016 she became a Fellow, and in 2017 she was voted in as a Board member.

Catherine Greensmith Hon. FITI

Catherine has been actively involved with the Institute for many years, serving as its Chairman twice, as a member of the Admissions Committee and more recently as a member of the Fellowship Committee.

Following an academic career spanning nearly 30 years, Catherine is now an independent lecturer.

Gillian Hargreaves FITI

Gillian has been working as a professional translator for over 30 years in various capacities: freelance, running her own agency as a sole trader, staff translator and – until 2010 – owner/director of a successful specialist translation company.

She has recently completed the circle by returning to freelance work, armed with a wealth of practical translation experience combined with an understanding of the issues faced by project managers.

Gillian has been an active member of the Institute for many years, previously serving on ITI Council from 1996 to 1998 and she is also chair of the Fellowship Committee.

Monica Machado MITI

Monica provides translation, ​transcreation, proofreading and localisation services from English into European Portuguese with sector specialisms including oil and gas, HSE, environment, shipping and hydropower, but frequently diversifies as business opportunities present themselves.​

She has had her own business for 17 years, originally in Portugal, and since 2013 operating from Norfolk. Her current client portfolio includes a number of major International blue-chip companies, notaries and embassies in Europe, America and Africa.

Maha El-Metwally MITI

Maha is a conference interpreter who is accredited to the European Institutions and the United Nations. Her languages are Arabic (A), English (B), French and Dutch (C).

She is a member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), the American Translators Association (ATA), the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) and ITI where she also serves on the Admissions Committee. She is the chair of the Human Rights Committee of the International Federation of Translators (FIT).

Maha has recently finished a Master of Advanced Studies in Interpreter Training at the University of Geneva. She now teaches conference interpreting at London Metropolitan University. She is associated with a number of universities in the UK and abroad where she gives professionalisation talks on a special interest of hers: technology for interpreters.

Maha is a regular contributor to the ITI Bulletin. A firm believer in the value of CPD and the importance of learning languages, she regularly speaks at career days at schools and colleges in the West Midlands.

Angela Dickson MITI

Angela has been a freelance translator (French to English, specialising in medicine) since 2004.

Following studies at Oxford (Modern Languages) and UCL (MA Linguistics), she took the CIoL’s DipTrans at the same time as starting her freelance career and working as a hospital administrator.

She has been an MITI since 2009.

Claire Suttie (Corporate representative)

Clare has been running Atlas Translations since 1991. The company provides translation and interpreting services in over 340 languages, and invests time and expertise in promoting the translation and interpreting profession with talks, exhibitions and training courses. It also tweets and blogs with help and advice for translators and interpreters at all stages of their careers.

As the Corporate representative on the ITI Board, Clare has a strong focus on helping translators and interpreters to want to work with reputable agencies of all shapes and sizes to everyone’s benefit.

Jonathan Downie (Associate representative)

Jonathan represents non-voting members on the Board.

He is a French to English and English to French consultant, conference interpreter, researcher, speaker and author.

He started his career shortly after graduating with an MSc in Translation and Conference Interpreting from Heriot-Watt University in 2007. He received a PhD from the same university in 2016 for his research on patterns in clients’ expectations of interpreters.

Jonathan is a Board member of the European Society for Translation Studies.

Jakub Sacharczuk (Associate representative)

Jakub represents non-voting members on the Board.

He is a Polish-English public service interpreter, and has been operating in the West Midlands since 2008 delivering linguistic support to the Polish community.

He holds a BSc in Chemistry and English Language from Aston University and the Metropolitan Police Test.

Jakub joined the ITI in 2012. He has an interest in mentoring students wishing to develop careers in the interpreting and translation profession, and is a tutor on ITI’s Starting Up as a Freelance Translator programme.

ITI currently has the following committees:

Purpose:

  • To oversee ITI membership applications based on the Institute's bylaws and quality standards
  • To propose appropriate amendments to the bylaws and to create and update literature for applicants and their referees

Chair: Cate Avery

Purpose:

  • To investigate potential breaches of the ITI Code of Professional Conduct and to recommend disciplinary measures if such a breach has occurred

Chair: Andrew Evans

Purpose:

  • To organise and provide training courses, workshops and other learning events that count towards members' CPD activities
  • To provide information and useful resources about Career Development

Chair: Kari Koonin

Purpose:

  • To consider applications from invited Qualified Members (MITI) for Fellowship of the Institute and to advise the Board on such proposed appointments

Chair: Gillian Hargreaves

Purpose:

  • To maintain the professionalism of the ITI Assessment and Interview including but not limited to the quality of the Assessment and Interview; material for candidates of the Assessment; reviewing the marking process; training the Assessors; auditing the process and assisting the ITI office with any issues that fit their remit
  • To recruit and provide training for Assessors and Interviewers for the Qualified Member Translator Assessment and Interpreter Interview

Chair: Andrew Leigh

Purpose:

  • To act as an independent panel for any appeals lodged as part of the Assessment process, based on the Institute's bylaws

Chair: Nicolas Chadwick

Purpose:

  • To act as the contact between the Networks and Regional Groups and the Board, and to advise the Board on actions it should take under Bylaw 5
  • Organisation of Network and Regional Groups Coordinators' Meetings
