The tools of your craft are words and this workshop will show you how to use them to maximum effect. This workshop is for anyone who wants to improve their target language writing skills whatever language they translate into.

During this session, you will:

  • Learn how various authors honed their skills through translating great writers
  • “Get paint on your hands” and find your own writer’s voice;
  • Have fun learning how to make both sides of your brain work for you
  • Experience hands-on writing activities in pairs/small groups
  • Encounter a practical demonstration of visual, aural, tactile, olfactory and gustatory stimuli (to enhance creativity)
  • Take part in a redraft and translation session to explore timeframe, culture and context, viewpoint/voice and cultural setting. (These will be tailored to meet the needs of the language groups present.)

Speaker

Ann Pattison FITI has been translating for fifty years this year and writing for almost half as long.  She was a Senior Lecturer in Translation at the University of Westminster until her retirement in 2011 and when she can tear herself away from her writing, she translates German patents and medical/general articles and French Social Science texts.

The Painting with Words concept was used some years ago with ITI French Network and LRG members and then with a multilingual regional network group. Ann has since refined the structure and added new themes.  You can read all about it in the eponymous chapter contributed by Ann to Translation and Creativity, edited by Manuela Perteghella and Eugenia Loffredo and published by Continuum in 2006.

Ann had a play The Roughs of the Wrythe performed by a community theatre group in 2017, and co-wrote another, which was put on in Sutton in 2014. On behalf of Sutton Writers, she has published two anthologies of members’ work and her novel Notes out of Time is available from lulu.com. More recently, Stella Cragie kindly invited Ann to be a co-author on Thinking English Translation, published by Routledge earlier this year.
