This hands-on workshop is aimed at practising and new translators who wish to:

  • Understand how corpora can be used as an aid to translation;

  • Learn to use existing corpora in different languages to help them with everyday questions about language (including questions for which dictionaries, grammars, search engines and other tools and resources do not always have clear answers);

  • Be able to build specialised language corpora to help them translate in specialised domains;

  • Be able to extract terminology from corpora to help them improve term consistency and use terms in context;

  • Enhance overall translation quality with the help of corpora;

No previous knowledge of corpora is required. You will be guided in using the state-of-the-art Sketch Engine tools and will have access to corpora in over sixty languages.

After the workshop, participants will be able to continue using Sketch Engine from their own computers for an extended trial period.

The workshop will be led by Dr Ana Frankenberg-Garcia, Reader in Translation Studies and Programme Leader of the MA in Translation at the University of Surrey. Ana has extensive experience of professional development, having previously delivered several highly successful corpus workshops for the ITI, the EU Commission DG-Translation, and the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, among others.
