Track 1 - Self-revision tips from the masters

45 mins Talk

Being able to effectively review our own work is an essential skill - yet it’s a very hard one to get right. What are some effective approaches, and what tips can we glean from the leading translators and specialists on the topic? Going a step further, how do we balance our own self-revision practices with the need for outside input and review?

In other words, what actually works?

This talk begins with a brief journey of reflection and self-discovery. Participants will be led to reflect on error management in other fields, common misperceptions, self-revision vs. other-revision, and what type of “animal” each of us is when it comes to translating and editing. A picture truly is worth a thousand words. Prepare to get your feet wet (or even take flight)!

We will then dive into some of the best practices in the field. Topics will include self-awareness, sequencing, critical distance, on-screen techniques, methods for fighting decision fatigue, and more.

In this brief but packed session, you’ll have a chance to think critically about your own practices, and perhaps even pick up a few new self-revision tricks you can keep up your sleeve.

Target audience: Primarily geared toward translators.
Audience takeaway: We’ll work mostly on self-awareness and a few fantastic tips for self-revision. In passing, we will also discuss the place and importance of revision by fellow translators.
