Track 2 - Let's not play it by ear

45 mins Key note speaker

Let's not play it by ear

What do rhetoric, music and rocket science have in common? And how do these relate to professionalism in interpreting?

In this talk we will explore how Aristotle’s main forms of rhetoric (ethos, logos and pathos) go far beyond the way we develop or convey a speech and should, indeed, be part and parcel of any professional interpreter’s repertoire, either working on site or remotely. We will also analyse how dissonance, specifically, cognitive dissonance, impacts how our clients and colleagues perceive us. Finally, we will connect this with the 3-stage rocket principle of effective marketing and apply it to interpreter performance.

I will invite my fellow interpreter colleagues (and interpreting students and future colleagues) to see beyond the basics of punctuality, neutrality and confidentiality, which we will also discuss, and define the behaviors, beliefs and values which the community at large, and ourselves, should immediately associate with the identity of a professional interpreter.

Target audience: Practicing interpreters and interpreter students.

Please note this session WILL NOT be recorded.
