Track 2 - Dealing with sensitive texts: the case for interpreting taboo

45 mins Talk

Why do people swear? Is it acceptable for people to swear or use profanities in public? Should we not discourage such utterances by ignoring them when interpreting? What are the consequences of doing so? What does the use of bad language say about the people who use it, and perhaps consequently about the interpreters who repeat them?

If you have faced such a dilemma at work, then this is a presentation you must not miss.

Target audience: Interpreters (conference and Public Services), and translators. Any linguist, practising or student, or teachers of languages.

PLEASE NOTE:  This presentation does contain language that some may find offensive.

Unfortunately Summer is no longer able to join us live for this session. Her presentation has been pre-recorded and Paul Appleyard and Nikki Bone will be on hand to answer as many questions as possible at the end. Any questions that they are unable to answer will be forwarded to Summer.
