The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication of Ghent University (Belgium) organises a Bachelor programme in Applied Language Studies that is strongly oriented towards translation and that lays the groundwork for three Masters degrees: one in Translation, one in Interpreting and a third one in Multilingual Communication. It is also possible to follow a teacher-training track in the Bachelor and the Masters.

Students are expected to have Dutch as their mother tongue and choose two other languages which they study to equal level in both the Bachelor and the Master programmes.

Third-year bachelor students spend one exchange semester abroad. An alternative study track (called AEL) allows students to spend two academic years abroad, one for each language.

The Department also organises a postgraduate (post-Master) course in Conference Interpreting and a postgraduate course in Computer-assisted Language Mediation. The PG course Dutch and Translation welcomes non-Dutch-speaking students who hold a Bachelors or Masters degree; it involves the study of Dutch and develops a range of skills in translation.

All students have access to a work experience module, and computer-aided translation software for the degree is provided by Memsource, with training facilitated by programme convenor Dr Sarah Maitland, who is a Memsource Certified Trainer and Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies. All students also have the opportunity to apply for Memsource Student Certification and through the Memsource Talent Endorsement Program, top-scoring certified students will be eligible to compete for paid translation work experience.

At the end of the MA, students complete a capstone independent translation and research project (please note that students are not required to complete a viva voce examination). Past students have used this as an opportunity to localise a videogame, subtitle a video, or translate a chapter of a book for pitching to publishers.

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to the language industries are offered within the School of Literature and Languages, by the Modern Languages section of the School and the Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) respectively.

Undergraduate programmes focus on communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the political, socio-linguistic and cultural/artistic context of the language areas students specialise in. Undergraduate students acquire valuable professional experience through their year-abroad programme (in their third year).

Our postgraduate programmes offer students the opportunity to specialise in translation, interpreting or both. CTS (founded in 1982) is a vibrant research and pedagogical centre, dedicated to the generation and dissemination of knowledge fundamental to the understanding of interlingual, intercultural and intermodal communication, through the prism of the ever-pressing responsible integration of human and machine translation.

Postgraduate students avail themselves of extra-curricular professional portfolio activities (e.g. external talks, online courses), intensive curricular training in translation/interpreting, joint university-industry projects and multilingual projects for Language Service Providers or the local community.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses benefit from state-of-the-art multimedia labs, interpreting booths, foreign-language resources (foreign films, media server), translation resources (professional subtitling and translation software, spoken language corpus, 3D interpreter training environment) and a well-stocked library.
