There is more to being a successful freelance translator than just being an excellent linguist. To succeed, you also need to know how to run a business, develop good client relationships and conduct yourself professionally.
Course length: approximately 5 hours, which can be logged as CPD hours.

How will I learn?
This course is split into 7 modules, each of which takes roughly 45 minutes to complete. There are a variety of teaching techniques in the course, including self-assessments, action plans, checklists, reading and videos, all of which can be completed at the pace that suits you best.
All seven modules provided nuggets of information which will assist me develop my new career. The information was presented in a clear and logical manner, and good examples and appropriate links illustrated relevant aspects, or enabled further learning.
Preparing for Professional Practice in Translation comprises seven modules, each covering a topic that is essential for success.
In this first module you’ll learn about the global translation profession, the opportunitites it offers and the threats it faces.
Find out about what's involved in setting up your business including business structures, tax, working from home, equipment you will need, and terms of business.
Broaden your understanding of the translation profession and learn about getting over the no-experience barrier, the different types of clients you can work with, plus other related career opportunities.
In this module, you will find out how to make yourself stand out from the crowd by making the most of your skills, knowledge and experience.
Learn about the importance of CPD. Find out how to set your personal goals and to record and evaluate your achievements, and how regular CPD will benefit you.
Crucial to any business, in this module you'll learn about different ways to price your services and how to create a business plan.
The final module focuses on how to market yourself effectively to different types of clients to get your freelance business off to a flying start.
