This session led by lawyer-linguist Sue Leschen, a full member of AIT, Director of Avocate Legal and Business French Services Ltd. Sue has 24 years experience in interpreting at these tribunals which deal with patients who have been detained (sectioned) under the Mental Health Act .
Attendees will learn about the very special skills required of interpreters in these settings and about the emotional, physical and linguistic challenges for interpreters working in this area. The session will focus on legal terminology and procedure and will be useful for both experienced and less experienced colleagues as well as for DPSI Law candidates.In the session we hope to cover:

Sue Leschen is a well-known lawyer–linguist who has married her twin passions of law and languages together. Sue practices as a legal and business French interpreter, as the Director of Manchester-based Avocate Legal and Business French Services Ltd. Sue is a Chartered Linguist (Interpreter status) and a non–practicing solicitor and has worked as a Public Service Interpreter since 2002. She is an NRPSI registrant.
Sue is a committee member of the CIOL’s Professional Conduct Committee, ITI’s LIFT committee, and an ordinary member of AIT, NWTN, YTI, ATC and ILETA.
Sue is an interpreters’ interpreter and is on a permanent mission to improve standards and training for legal interpreters.
