| Forging Fresh Paths: from Trade Fairs to Tourism The ITI Media, Arts and Tourism Network is delighted to announce this webinar, led by experienced translators Simon Berrill and Jae Marple, in which we will explore ways of finding new clients and combining specialisms in fresh and inspiring ways. Simon's presentation will focus on 'Constantly Creating Connections.' In the new translation landscape we now have to navigate, agency work has declined to such an extent, both in terms of volume and rates, that it’s virtually impossible to survive on it. Direct clients are no longer the icing on the cake – they have to be our bread and butter. However, finding (and keeping!) direct clients who believe in the value of human translation is not easy; it requires work, dedication and patience. In this talk, Simon will suggest some ways of doing so, based on his own experience, ranging from attending trade fairs and other client events to making the most of all networks available to us. He doesn't claim to have all the answers, though. Everyone’s circumstances are different and there is no “one size fits all” solution, so he hopes to spark a productive discussion on this topic, as he firmly believes this is the key to our future. Jae will talk about 'Combining Specialisms, Interests and Skillsets,' discussing how he has specialised in sports and tourism translation and the kind of work that he has done in both areas, before sharing how he has combined the two to serve sports tourism clients specifically. He will then outline the skills and knowledge required to successfully perform sports tourism work and invite the audience to think about existing or potential translation specialisms that they could combine with tourism, as well additional language services that they could provide to new and existing tourism clients, or even clients in other industries. The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session and a chance to brainstorm ideas for finding new clients or sources of work. We would like to encourage everyone to contribute to the discussion - the more ideas and inspiration the better! |
