Join us for a Social Saturday where we’ll take a closer look at the developments in Generative AI being used within our profession, and discuss strategies as to how we can navigate this brave new world without drowning!

The event is aimed at practising translators and interpreters within the North West Network and ITI, whether new to the profession or seasoned professionals.

For the first hour,  Angela Sigee will present:

  • General information on MT, in particular NMT

  • Generative AI and its use for translation purposes
  • A closer look at the metrics used to evaluate such tools’ performance, a topic that is rarely explained
  • General trends in the development of AI-based tools for translators and interpreters
  • The impact of these developments on our profession, our work processes, the freelance business model and the language industry in general - a crucial aspect, sadly, being the downward pressure on our rates.

Following a break, we’ll then facilitate a panel discussion featuring the following panellists: Michael Farrell (via Zoom), Silke Lührmann, Louise Killeen and Silvia Terribile (in-person). The discussion will be opened up to the floor, so attendees can raise their fears, hopes and everything else in between.

Refreshments will be provided during the break (tea and coffee, cakes & traybakes). Please note they may contain allergens and should be consumed at your own risk.

We are returning to the beautiful venue of the House of Books & Friends on King Street, and hope you can join our undoubtedly lively debate on this subject.
