Since the appearance of ChatGPT we have been inundated with hype about artificial intelligence (AI) and what it can do. For translators, this is a second wave of AI hype after the advent of neural machine translation eight years ago. This workshop aims to cut through the hype, looking at the technology behind current AI, ethics and sustainability implications, and what we can reasonably expect from AI output.

The principle should be that the level of automation should equate to the value, shelf-life, risk, and impact of the task. With that in mind, we consider ways that we each might actually use AI for low-stakes tasks (should we want to), to see whether we can perceive a benefit rather than just a threat.
