Words as evidence: A pattern seekers' guide to forensic linguistics
Every text leaves a trace. In this session, the Neurodiversity Network will explore how language itself becomes evidence, tracing the line between linguistic philology, the historical study of how language and texts evolve, and forensic linguistics, its applied counterpart used to answer real questions in legal and criminal investigations. From authorship attribution to analysing police interviews and courtroom testimony for signs of coercion or ambiguity, they will unpack the methods linguists use to read between the lines of disputed documents, confessions, and cross-language communication.
Drawing on real case studies and firsthand experience in policing and intelligence work, this introduction by Iir Prihatinawati offers a practical, pattern-driven look at how words can reveal truth, deception, and everything in between
