ITI Parent and Carer Network: Pensions, tax and financial planning for freelance linguists

The ITI Parent and Carer Network is running an online Zoom webinar on pensions and financial planning for freelance linguists.

Siddarth Agarwal from DNS Accountants and Bhavesh Patel from Quilter will talk to us about pensions and financial planning in a 1.5 hour session, with time for your questions. Please do send any specific questions in advance to [email protected], or you can ask them on the day.

The recording will be sent to you after the event, so please do sign up, even if you can’t join on the day. £10.00 per person, and free for members of the ITI Parent and Carer Network. If you wish to join, please email [email protected].

Session overview

Financial planning can feel overwhelming, particularly for freelancers who don’t have the support of an employer’s pension or workplace benefits. This session will look at the key principles of building long-term financial security, whatever stage of your career you’re at.

Bhavesh will cover choosing a pension, deciding how much to save, making the most of tax-efficient options such as pensions and ISAs, protecting your income, understanding investment risk, and planning for retirement. Rather than trying to identify the “best” investment or predict what markets will do next, the session focuses on the principles that have stood the test of time and can help you make better financial decisions with confidence.

Siddharth will look at pensions and financial planning from a freelancer's point of view. We will start with pensions: the tax relief you can claim on your contributions, which is one of the most valuable and most often missed benefits for the self-employed. From there we will move on to maximising expenses, and how to build a plan.

We will also talk about protecting your income, including income protection and other cover worth knowing about when you do not have an employer to fall back on, and we will finish with the wider points that matter most for freelancers planning their finances. You do not need any background in pensions or tax to follow along, and there will be plenty of time at the end for your own questions.

About the speakers

Bhavesh Patel DipPFS, FCMA is a Financial Planning Consultant with Quilter Financial Advisors and has over 20 years’ experience in investment banking and financial services. Throughout his career, he has helped individuals, families and business owners make informed decisions about pensions, investments, tax planning and retirement.

The financial planning principles he shares are the same ones he has used throughout his own career to build long-term financial independence.
Bhavesh enjoys helping people make sense of financial planning and believes that with the right guidance, everyone can make confident decisions about their financial future.

Siddharth Agarwal is Tax Director at DNS Accountants, where he works with freelancers, sole traders and small business owners to help them keep more of what they earn and plan ahead with confidence.

With 13 years of advising self-employed clients, Siddharth focuses on tax and financial planning for people who work for themselves, from pensions and savings through to the tax that sits behind them. He is known for taking the jargon out of tax matters and giving practical guidance that freelancers can actually put to use.
