Miss Paola Riboldi MITI
I studied Translation Studies at the SSIT University of Rome, which offered both translating and interpreting modules. The practice-based components were complemented by background lectures to explain the major principles of translation and interpreting, discussing translation choices. My MA thesis was the translation of a textbook on Paediatrics.
After my MA in Translation Studies, I moved to Milan to work as in-house translator at Fininvest SpA, where I was in charge of translation projects such as press releases, newspaper articles, contracts and legal texts related to the company’s TV and publishing business. Fininvest SpA was my starting point in legal translation, I managed large translation projects, working closely with the company’s solicitors for localization projects.
In 2005 I obtained a second MA degree in Modern Languages at IULM University in Milan, with my dissertation “Internazionalizzazione dell’inglese medico orale e scritto.
ipotesi per un nuovo progetto di ricerca per la costituzione di Medicinespeak” on medical writing by non-native English speakers.
After 2 years at Fininvest , I set up as a professional freelance translator and moved to London. Amongst my clients were the Italian Embassy in London, RAI UK, and translation companies based in the UK, Italy, and the USA.
I also worked for the Universities of Padua, Brescia and Rome in Italy, translating abstracts, textbooks, clinical trials and patient notes. I spent the first 10 years as a freelancer working closely with medical researchers, surgeons and academics at several Italian universities, translating scientific papers and publications. I tackled highly specialised texts such as surgical procedures, surgical instruments, diagnostic equipment, clinical trials and scientific reports into Italian. It was a very intense learning curve and a major stepping stone for me to establish myself as a freelance translator. Medicine and law soon became my specialist subjects.
my freelance translation career for private clients and for translation companies based in the UK, Italy, and the USA.
In 1986 I became a Founding Member of the Institute of Transaltion and Interpreting (ITI).
In 1995 I was contacted by the University of Westminster to teach at their MA Course in Medical Translation. Teaching was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, I could transfer the knowledge I had gained to the students. To my great satisfaction, some of them are now professional freelance translators.
I was Visiting Professor in Medical Translation at the MA Course in Translation at Westminster University from1995 to 2000, and from 2017 to 2018.
I translate a large array of subjects within human and veterinary medicine: surgery, surgical procedures and equipment, clinical medicine, pharmaceutical protocols, AIFA applications, and clinical trials. I also provide certified, sworn and notarized translations of legal texts, including contracts, evidence documents, litigation materials, business contracts, insurance documents.
I have been a Mentor for ITI for the last 10 years. I find mentoring and teaching extremely rewarding and inspiring.
I am a Sworn Translator for the Italian Consulate in London.
I now share my time between my beloved Putney home in London and Rome, where as well as freelancing I am a CTU (Consulente Tecnico d'Ufficio Giudiziario - Consultant for the Judiciary) for the Civil Courts (Tribunale Civile, Sezione Asseveramento Perizie e Traduzioni)
