Ghent University

The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication of Ghent University (Belgium) organises a Bachelor programme in Applied Language Studies that is strongly oriented towards translation and that lays the groundwork for three Masters degrees: one in Translation, one in Interpreting and a third one in Multilingual Communication. It is also possible to follow a teacher-training track in the Bachelor and the Masters.

Students are expected to have Dutch as their mother tongue and choose two other languages which they study to equal level in both the Bachelor and the Master programmes.

Third-year bachelor students spend one exchange semester abroad. An alternative study track (called AEL) allows students to spend two academic years abroad, one for each language.

The Department also organises a postgraduate (post-Master) course in Conference Interpreting and a postgraduate course in Computer-assisted Language Mediation. The PG course Dutch and Translation welcomes non-Dutch-speaking students who hold a Bachelors or Masters degree; it involves the study of Dutch and develops a range of skills in translation.

The MA Interpreting and Translating (MAIT) course covers professional translation and different types of interpreting, including simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and liaison in public service and commercial settings. Students have access to digital interpreting suites and participate in mini-conferences to put skills into practice, holding debates on controversial topics and acting as both delegate and interpreter.

The MA Translation and Professional Languages Skills (TPLS) course was developed in 2003 in response to requests from employers for linguists with advanced training in translation, editing and proofreading, among other skills. This is one of the few courses to train students in such a variety of sought-after skills, which can be used immediately in the professional market.

Both courses are taught by professional linguists who bring their extensive experience to their teaching to prepare students for the professional market.

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to the language industries are offered within the School of Literature and Languages, by the Modern Languages section of the School and the Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) respectively.

Undergraduate programmes focus on communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the political, socio-linguistic and cultural/artistic context of the language areas students specialise in. Undergraduate students acquire valuable professional experience through their year-abroad programme (in their third year).

Our postgraduate programmes offer students the opportunity to specialise in translation, interpreting or both. CTS (founded in 1982) is a vibrant research and pedagogical centre, dedicated to the generation and dissemination of knowledge fundamental to the understanding of interlingual, intercultural and intermodal communication, through the prism of the ever-pressing responsible integration of human and machine translation.

Postgraduate students avail themselves of extra-curricular professional portfolio activities (e.g. external talks, online courses), intensive curricular training in translation/interpreting, joint university-industry projects and multilingual projects for Language Service Providers or the local community.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses benefit from state-of-the-art multimedia labs, interpreting booths, foreign-language resources (foreign films, media server), translation resources (professional subtitling and translation software, spoken language corpus, 3D interpreter training environment) and a well-stocked library.
