Why this workshop is relevant and timely

The FIFA World Cup is taking place in the summer of 2026, so there is currently great demand for sports translation and exacting time constraints under which that work is commissioned. The profile of sports translation has also risen significantly in recent years, attracting both new and experienced translators who want to specialise in this field.

Description of training content

Ahead of the session, participants are encouraged to find a text about their specialist sport in (one of) their source language(s) and translate a small section of it (maximum of 300-500 words). While translating this text, participants will also be asked to note any particular linguistic or research strategies they have employed to overcome certain challenges or come up with certain solutions.

During the first 30-45 minutes of the session, participants will be encouraged to share these strategies so that all attendees can learn from each other. This will be very interactive, so depending on the number of participants, breakout rooms may be required. Following on from that, Jae will share an example of a sports translation he has done professionally, explaining certain choices that he has made.

This will also be followed by a presentation at the end, where Jae will discuss ways to hone your skills as a sports translator and develop ways to deliver high-quality sports translation work under time pressures through CPD opportunities, time-management strategies, research techniques, etc. Finally, the session will then end with a Q&A session.

Participants will be emailed a week ahead of the event to be reminded about having a piece of text ready for the session.
