| Sue Leschen and Helen Veitch will give a joint presentation on Immigration & asylum law and practice for linguists. In the first part of this webinar, Helen will give a general overview of the immigration rules, protection routes and nationality law, with a focus on concepts and terminology specific to this field. We will then look at a case study of a young family who have recently migrated to the UK. In the second half of the session Sue will briefly explain where and when interpreters interpret in asylum cases. She will then focus on the effects of traumatic asylum cases on interpreters. She will also consider situations when interpreters in this area may decide to intervene to explain missed and/ or misunderstood cultural issues to the court or to Home Office caseworkers. Sue Leschen is an entrepreneurial lawyer - linguist and a Fellow of ITI. She is a member of the ITI LIFT committee and is currently leading the ITI LIFT website development sub committee. Helen Veitch is a Japanese to English translator migrating indefinitely into immigration law. She runs a (very) small business supporting Japanese kids with their visa applications to study in the UK, but mainly works as an immigration adviser with a charity called Voices in Exile, supporting vulnerable migrants who would otherwise be unable to access justice. She is also a founding member of the Brighton Language Collective co-working space. |
