This live, interactive series offers practical, hands-on guidance, expert insights, and dedicated time for discussion and questions.

With four standalone sessions to choose from, you can build your own learning journey by attending the sessions most relevant to your circumstances, or join all four for the complete experience.

In this workshop series, you'll gain a better understanding of:

  • The training pathways available to aspiring legal interpreters, from initial qualifications to ongoing professional development

  • The advantages and challenges of a career as a legal interpreter

Session 1

Session 1 | 10 September 2026 | 2pm - 4pm (BST)

Introduction to the series.

This session will cover:

  • Overview of the course to help attendees decide whether to attend some or all of the webinars, depending on their individual circumstances
  • Initial training, with in-depth focus on the DPSI Law exam
  • Subsequent CPD including discussion of essential legal, business and technical skills
  • Guidance on running a successful business as an entrepreneurial legal interpreter

Session 2

Session 2 | 17 September 2026 | 2pm - 4pm (BST)

Where legal interpreters work, who we work with and where we can find clients.

This session will cover:

  • Legal job venues: courts, police stations, prisons, raids, remote working from home   
  • Clients needing legal interpreters: prisoners, victims, mentally ill, fraudsters  
  • Legal and other professionals who we work with in legal venues and their roles: lawyers, judges, magistrates, intermediaries

Session 3

Session 3 | 30 September 2026 | 2pm - 4pm (BST)

Which areas of law we work in, how we prepare for work, and how we get paid.

This session will cover:

  • Legal subject matter interpreted: civil, criminal, family law, immigration law

  • Preparation for legal jobs, getting materials from clients and building our own legal terminology glossaries

  • Rates and payment issues: private, Legal Aid, late or non–payers, deposits and instalments

  • Q&A

Session 4

Session 4 | 10 October 2026 | 2pm - 4pm (GMT)

How we should behave inside and outside of work, what we have learned so far, and next career steps

This session will cover:

  • Professional conduct: professional behaviour, Codes Of Conduct, regulation by professional bodies

  • Ethical dilemmas: religious and other personal moral reasons for not wanting to accept certain jobs

  • Resources and materials to help us progress our careers: books, articles, films, social media  

  • Series wrap-up and guidance on next steps in your career

  • Q&A
