Our first CPD activity of the year is going to be an online workshop centred on something we might not be paying enough attention to: the voice.

Your speaking voice is a precious asset. We always expect it to be on standby, so why not give it a little more care and attention to help it help us?

This is going to be a two-part workshop:

Part 1 of the workshop is all about freeing up your unique voice (no fake, ‘ideal’ voices here!), applying some practical techniques that can bring out your clearest, most confident vocal tone – helping you get your valuable ideas across with impact in your next presentation or phone call.

Part 2 focuses more on voice care for more sustained, demanding vocal tasks like interpreting or re-speaking. Specific requirements around speaking style, pace and volume – all while concentrating intensely for long periods – can potentially place some strain on the voice. We’ll look at how to support the voice in these situations so your output is sustained, comfortable and effective.

The workshop is designed for translators and interpreters who use their voice a little or a lot!

Whether your job involves mainly writing, or you spend most of your day speaking, you may have had moments when your speaking voice didn’t quite hit the mark, was weaker or less clear than you would like, or it got tired sooner than expected. The techniques covered in the workshop will help you address this and more.

Ultimately, we want to help you trust and enjoy your speaking voice more!

About the workshop leader:

Sonya Ross has been helping international professionals make the most of their speaking voice since 2006. In addition to her bespoke one-to-one training, she runs regular pronunciation workshops and is developing an online course in clear speech fundamentals. She is a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) and the International Phonetic Association.

Each part of the workshop is going to last an hour, with a 15-minute break in between.
