With survey results showing that freelancers are struggling financially, issues of fair pay and fair work are increasingly on the lips of translators and interpreters around Europe. Numerous factors are driving this: dynamic pricing grids and unilaterally imposed rate adjustments, predatory practices among large translation agencies, the increasing trend towards automation and algorithmic management, the rise of platforms, and on the positive side, changes in competition law and collective bargaining rules.
The FIT Europe Working Group on Fair Work believes a constructive approach is needed to debate these issues and define mutually beneficial working relationships between agencies and freelance translators and interpreters.
Join FIT Europe on 17 April for the Working Group’s first online panel discussion between representatives of Fair Work (an action-research project that aims to shed light on how technological changes and platforms affect working conditions around the world), translation associations, and language service company representatives to explore these topics.
Moderator: Lyam Bittar
Panellists: Patrick Feuerstein & Giulia Varashin / Fair Work
Diego Cresceri / Creative Words
Anja Jones / Team AJT, B Corp certified translation agency
