What makes patent translation different? Although they fall squarely within technical translation, patent translations always have a legal value as well; so translators have to consider how the words they choose could affect the validity of the patent or how it might be interpreted by a patent court.

This webinar will attempt to demonstrate the mental gymnastics that allow translators to meet these challenges. It will be given by Cate Avery FITI, who has been a patent translator since the late 1980s. She will begin with an introduction to patents, then discuss how they are translated, including standard terminology. Participants will then divide into breakout rooms to tackle a sample patent.
