A large-scale 2023 AIIC survey revealed that a majority of conference interpreters use machine-translation tools such as Google Translate or DeepL, both when preparing assignments and in real time when interpreting.
High time to have a closer look at how interpreters actually use MT in their professional practice.
Is it advisable, efficient or even ethical to use MT in interpreting? What are the benefits, limitations and potential drawbacks?
The webinar will kick off with a presentation by Udo Jorg MITI about use cases and challenges of MT tools in conference and business interpreting based on his own practice and observations, followed by a wider discussion amongst peers with – hopefully – plenty and diverse contributions from the participants.
Udo Jorg MITI is a German conference and business interpreter and translator with nearly 30 years of experience based in London. For almost a decade, he also worked as a part-time senior lecturer in interpreting at London Metropolitan University. He sat on the ITI Council (now the Board) from 2010 to 2012 and co-authored the 2011 ITI/CIOL Rates and Salaries Survey. Recently he has joined the ITI’s Interpreters’ Development Network as Events person.
