Dr Marianne Chalmers MITI

A highly-qualified bilingual and bi-cultural translator (BA, PhD, Chartered Institute of Linguists Diploma in Translation, Chartered Linguist) of 35 years’ standing. Formerly an editor on the Oxford-Hachette French-English Dictionary series, and editor of the Oxford Business French Dictionary. Specialist domains include: literature, art, culture, the humanities, exhibition material, visitor documentation and audio guides for world-leading museums (e.g. Louvre/Louvre Abu Dhabi/ 60 exhibitions for the Musée d’Orsay/ Musée de l’Orangerie/Musée du quai Branly/Musée d’arts de Nantes/Musée Jules Verne/Musée d’Épinal/Musée de Bibracte, etc.), spirituality and esoterica, history of ideas, film, food, wine, hospitality, tourism, fashion and luxury goods, heritage projects, and academic writing in the humanities. The arts and humanities are often poorly served in translation and translation technology cannot replace sensitive close-reading. My academic research and lexicography background, combined with close contact with French culture, media, the arts and visual arts, provides an excellent level of specialist knowledge and ensures an appropriate cultural fit in translation.
