Welcome to the International Development & Cooperation Network of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI)!
Our aims
We are a new network, but we’re clear on our aims.
We want to offer translators and Interpreters specialising in the international development and cooperation sector a place to:
- Discuss issues affecting the sector
- Share resources, events and expertise with colleagues working in the sector
- Get advice on terminology
- Stay up to date with developments in the sector
- Access relevant training and support
- Collaborate with colleagues
The International Development & Cooperation Network aims to further a common professional interest in international development and cooperation, including human rights and international migration.

Our committee
Sara Horcas-Rufián MITI MCIL CL
Sara Horcas-Rufián is a freelance translator (English to Spanish). She specialises in operational and advocacy communications for the international development sector. Her client portfolio includes UN specialised agencies and related organisations, including multilateral development banks, as well as international, independent NGOs.
She also enjoys researching and writing, and is currently working towards her doctoral dissertation in Translation Studies.
Holly-Anne Whyte MITI MCIL
Holly, an MITI and Chartered Linguist, is a translator and editor working from French and Spanish into her native English. She specialises in translating at the intersection between human rights and sustainable development.
Holly has been a freelance translator for over 10 years and works mainly with small-to-medium NGO clients and specialised translation agencies. She is passionate about enabling partners to communicate clearly across language and cultural barriers, and supporting local communities to make their voices heard at the international level.
Belinda Allen MITI Dip Trans
Belinda is a (French to English) translator and editor specialising in international development, sustainability, health and social policy. Working largely through specialist agencies, her end clients range from small NGOs to intergovernmental organisations, including UN and EU institutions.
After studying languages and translation, Belinda worked in funding, fundraising and administration for non-profit organisations, before managing to combine the two interests and move into full-time translation in this sector in 2014.
Isabel Hurtado de Mendoza MITI
Spanish national with in-depth knowledge of the English-speaking world. Specialisms: humanitarian issues, environment, education, fiction, arts, tourism, marketing & media. Main clients: NGOs, international organizations, publishing houses and educational organizations.

Claire Sjaarda AITI
Claire Sjaarda is an English to French translator specialising in international development with a focus on climate change, women empowerment, education and nutrition. She holds an MA in Translation with distinction from the London Metropolitan University and full membership from several professional associations including the Société française des traducteurs and the American Translators Association. After 16 years living and working in the UK (London), she is now based in New Zealand and works for a range of clients including UN agencies and other international organisations across various time zones.

Sabine Citron MITI, Chartered linguist
Sabine is from Geneva in Switzerland. She translates from English and German into French. IDC is one of her favourite areas of specialisation. As well as reports for many international organisations (such as WHO, UNDP, UN Women, UNESCO and FAO), she translated a book about Swiss economic history. Her previous jobs all focused on making words work: lexicographer and senior project manager with HarperCollins Dictionaries, director and chair of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, translator at the UN agency WIPO, writer with the ICRC, editor of 16th century documents and teacher of Latin translation at university.
Sue Mason MA/DipTrans
Sue Mason is a translator from Spanish and German to English, with over thirty years’ experience as an advocate, self-advocacy facilitator and researcher in the fields of health and community support, both in the statutory and voluntary sector. Sue completed an MA in Translation in 2021, and now works part-time as a translator, alongside her role as an employment advisor and enabler for autistic adults in Cumbria, UK. She has a long-term interest in global health, gender equality, and the politics of food.
