Everything you need to know about sports translation and interpreting

Jae Marple

Jae is a French, Spanish and Portuguese to English translator specialising in sport, tourism and international development.

He regularly works on sports translations, particularly for the football and darts industries. His football work mainly involves translating articles on FIFA competitions, transcribing pre-match and post-match interviews with players before and after big games, and transcribing interviews with ex-players and managers for documentaries. He also does the odd football interpreting assignment, having worked at many exciting venues such as St' George's Park and the TNT Sports studios.

He has only recently managed to break into darts translation – a newly emerging field – but has already worked on the English translations of darts product descriptions for retailers in Spain and Portugal and several darts articles.

In addition, he has translated many texts related to last years' Rugby World Cup in France, as well as many brochures and websites about rugby-themed tourism in the south of France. His translation portfolio also includes a beginner's guide to the Spanish racquet sport padel, and several texts related to tennis, cycling and sports clothing.

James Calder

James is a translator (ES/FR/PT>EN), writer and subtitler specialising in sports.

He has over 20 years’ experience and works with global governing bodies, publications and leading sports translation agencies. In that time he has covered virtually every sport, working on Olympic Games, World Cups and a host of other events, translating anything and everything from futsal coaching manuals to player interviews, writing articles on football and Olympic legacy, and subtitling coaching videos, interviews and F1 highlights. Though he specialises in football, he also has expertise in rugby, tennis and motorsports. Just don’t ask him to do anything on basketball.

Laura Bennett

Laura has been a full-time translator from French & Italian into English for 15 years – she specialises in art history and sport. In the art side of her work, she translates for major museums, publishers and audio guide companies. When it comes to sport, her main focus is football and tennis, although she is a keen runner and is also developing a niche in this field. She has translated seven major football biographies about players such as Kylian Mbappé, Mo Salah and Zinedine Zidane. She also regularly works on corporate hospitality documents for a grand slam tennis tournament and translates materials for a well-known fitness machine manufacturer. She became an FITI in 2023.

Robert Paulig

Robert is a certified (sworn) translator working from English & French into German and has over 15 years of experience in the language industry. He also works as an editor, proofreader, subtitler and language consultant. As an avid runner, cyclist (road bike), swimmer, lover of multiple sports (from bouldering to inline skating) and football fan (he has attended matches in 30+ countries), sport is in his blood.

Robert’s work focuses mainly on football, biathlon, running, cycling and other outdoor sports and ranges from in-depth match analyses to competition reports and specialist marketing material for sports & outdoor brands. He has also had the honour of translating biographies of Erling Haaland and Marco Pantani into German.
